CES 2008: Hands-On With Sony-Ericsson's New Phones, the W350, W760 and Z555

Name: Sony Ericsson W350
Specs: 0.3" thick walkman phone with 512MB expandable storage, 1.3-megapixel camera and FM radio.
Price: About $150 unlocked
First Impression: Ultra-thin, futuristic, available in spiffing metallic blue color. Ingenious flip cover adds extra controls without extra mechanicals. At that price, an easy Samsung UpStage-killer.

Name: Sony Ericsson W760

Specs: HSDPA fast internet, GPS, 3 megapixel camera, beefy video chip, slider keypad.

Price: About $300 unlocked

First Impression: Capable, fully-featured, with powerful 3D gaming, but a little bland.

Name: Sony Ericsson Z555

Specs: OLED display hidden under 1970s cigarette case-like finish, 1.3 mp camera, the basics.

Price: About $180 unlocked

First Impression: Girly, shiny, bling overload: trust no man who uses one.

CES 2008: Hands On With The Motorola ROKR E8

Hellooooo nurse. So I got my paws all over a prototype for a Motorola ROCKR E8 today. Very sweet device. Nothing ground breaking here, but definitely solid all the way around. Took it on a segment for G4 ( and dragged a Motorola rep around the show floor in tow. I'll have a post up on that adventure in a little bit though.)

The phone itself is a tad large, but feels substantial in hand. It’s a candy bar, has 2GB of memory for music, video, and other assorted video. I actually made a few calls home with it too (to tell mom I was gonna be on TV) and found audio quality to be precise and fairly clear. There was a light echo, but this was a pre production model.

Now the handset’s coolest feature? Easily the slick trick of switching the phone controls to media controls. Press the button that looks like a music note and the buttons become dedicated to controlling your tunes. Get a call? No problem at all, music pauses, phone buttons illuminate, and you can take it. Rinse and repeat if necessary.

Haptic feedback on the device is also pretty sweet. The buzz generated from each button is responsive but not annoying. Can’t say the same about handsets like the LG Voyager.

CES 2008: SE Announces 3 New Walkman Phones

It's official. Sony Ericsson has showcased three new Walkman phones, to be made available by the second quarter of this year. SE made the announcement at the on-going CES 2007, Las Vegas yesterday. Amongst the phones that were displayed include W760i, w350i and the Z555i.

The W760 is said to be a slider phone equipped with quad-band GSM/EDGE as well as tri-band 850/1900/2100 HSDPA radios for 3G roaming. Cool features like SensMe to turn off alarms and taking calls by just waving the hand over the phone/ Preloaded Google maps, Track ID and shake control are some of the features we can expect from the model.

While the W760i comes with a 3.2 MP camera, the W350i features 1.3MP, and other features that we saw in SE Walkman phones already present in the market. Word has it that the W350i will be a flip phone. The Z555i is a clamshell design and comes with a hidden OLED exterior display, shake control and stereo Bluetooth.

CES 2008: Samsung Shows Off Loaded Mobiles

At CES 2008 Samsung’s booth features 3 of their heavy hitting mobile phones that vary in range from, music to business to simply innovative designs.

SGH- i450

The Samsung SGH-i450 may very well be an N95 wannabe with a slide out keypad and a secondary slide out keypad from the top, but in no way is it the same. This phone uses a type of touch sensitive scroll wheel system to navigate the music player and menus. It runs on a Symbian S60 OS and supports Bluetooth (with A2DP) and external memory up to 4Gb with microSD cards. It’s also equipped with a 2 megapixel camera and is 3G enabled with a secondary video call camera in front. What really makes this music phone stand out is the ICEpower amplifier developed by Bang & Olufsen.

SGH - G800

Samsung already has the G-600 with a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera so you’d wonder what’s next and the answer is – The G800, which could very well be the world's first 5 megapixel auto-focus camera phone with 3x optical zoom and a Xenon flash. Of course the fact that it’s a slim slider goes without saying. It’s also equipped with the usual features like Bluetooth (with A2DP), 3G with HSDPA, large 2.4 inch display etc. But it’s the camera with face detection; professional video editing functions and a mobile blogging feature that makes this mobile something to look out for.

SGH-i620

The Samsung SGH-i620 is a Windows Mobile device running on Windows Mobile 6.0. It has a slide out QWERTY keypad but unfortunately the screen size may not be too agreeable with everyone at just 2.2 inches. Nevertheless the device also offers other options like a 2 megapixel camera, an RSS reader and Podcasting. It also supports Bluetooth with A2DP.

SGH-i780

Another Windows mobile device that will be featured is the SGH-i780 that has a 2.5 inch touch screen as well as a full QWERTY keypad. This handset also runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 and comes equipped with GPS, 3G with HSDPA, a 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP capabilities and Push email. It also has a TV out option and supports external memory with microSD cards like the others in this display. It also has an optical mouse for navigation.
