Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 Available Early Q4 with Windows Mobile 6.5

Sony Ericsson announces the Xperia X2, powered by the new Windows Mobile 6.5 in a similar design but improved hardware specs compare to Xperia X1. The Xperia X2 also includes the unique SlideView feature, which provides quick access to frequently used phone activities. SlideView gives an overview of missed incoming activity, notifying the user of any missed calls, e-mails and text messages so users don’t overlook an important contact.

With 14 specially designed preloaded Xperia panels and 16 more to download, you can quickly switch to panels like Skype, Mytopia, Google, CNN and Windows Live. Although the new X2 will only be upgraded to a 3.2-inch full touch screen, the new Windows Phone now comes with a 8.1 megapixel camera and flash LED.

Sony Ericsson shows new Xperia Pureness at London brand event

Today at a business update meeting, Sony Ericsson showed the new Xperia Pureness, a simple design phone which brings together beautiful craftsmanship and the concept of “talk, text, time – a holiday from technology”. The Xperia Pureness will be officially launched in November 2009 through selected retail distribution channels in key cities around the world.

The handset was shown to media attending an event to launch Sony Ericsson’s new brand direction where the company also confirmed its alignment under the Sony make.believe brand message. Xperia Pureness approaches the mobile phone as a work of art rather than technology. The company’s designers aimed to sculpt an object of design that reflected the purity of water and a sense of calmness when not in use.

More details on Xperia Pureness will be available when the phone launches in November 2009.

Sony Ericsson launches Panel SDK for Developer

Sony Ericsson this week launches the Panel SDK in a drive to encourage developers to create content for the new Xperia X2. The Panel SDK includes a Panelizer which turns existing Flash, Java and Windows Mobile applications into Panels for the Xperia X2, and a native software development kit which allows developers to be the first to create panels for the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform.

“Putting developers’ applications directly in front of consumers is a crucial focus for us,” says Christopher David, Head of Developer and Partner Engagement at Sony Ericsson. “We created the Panel SDK to streamline the development process, minimising the time it takes to get applications directly to the consumer and providing developers with additional revenue opportunities.”

Sony Ericsson Announces Motion Activated Headphones MH907

Is this going to change the way you listen the music? Sony Ericsson is introducing its new MH907 headphones, comes with the world’s first motion activated sensor to control the music playback. Sony Ericsson’s SensMe Control responds without a single press of a button. You can pause the music playback just by removing one earbud, and to start listening again you can simply plug the earbud back.

“With the MH907 consumers can pocket their phone but still stay connected all day, every day by simply plugging in or removing their earbuds – there is no need for a remote control or any buttons.” said Jacob Sten, Senior Vice President, SEMC Accessories.

When both earbuds are inserted, the phone’s music player automatically
starts. Remove one earbud to pause music and reinsert it to begin playing the
track again.

To answer a call, insert one earbud. Or, if you are listening to music
and receive a call, just remove one earbud and reinsert it.

Sounds great right? The MH907 needs a Sony Ericsson phones with a fast port connector to work with, that means it will not be compatible with any other phones with bluetooth yet.

Hands-on video of Sony Ericsson's Idou, its first S60/Symbian Foundation smartphone

With the official start of the Mobile World Congress 2009 only hours away, Sony Ericsson announced its Idou smartphone at a press event in Barcelona. We sat down with a few Sony Ericsson execs to talk about the new smartphone, which will be the first device from Sony Ericsson to run on the new Symbian Foundation(INFO) platform. The open-source Symbian Foundation OS is being built upon Nokia's S60(INFO) user interface and the Symbian OS(INFO), and will look very much like the current Nokia S60 5th Edition that runs on the Nokia 5800 XpressMedia, if our sources are to believed.

Since the Idou is a prototype, and doesn't even have an official name yet, we were unable to get video of the smartphone actually powered up. But we did get a chance to play around with the hardware enough to at least be able to imagine what is coming.

For being such early hardware, the Idou felt solidly built. We could see the 12.1 megapixel camera's autofocus lens and Xenon flash, and the signage on the device told us that it will feature DLNA compatible WiFi and GPS as well. The display measures 3.5 inches across and is in a wide screen format, though we don't know what the actual pixel resolution will be.
In terms of the look and feel of the user interface, we can expect it to be fairly true to the stock Symbian Foundation UI, which is expected to look much like S60 5th Edition. Sony Ericsson reps did say that we should expect to see the same kind of Sony Ericsson user experience type apps on the Idou as we see on Sony Ericsson's feature phones and its Xperia X1, though there was no mention specifically of the Xperia panels, which we are not expecting.

We have been told that the full announcement for the Idou, which will contain its final name, full specs, and expected availability date, will come to us by early Summer of 2009. We're looking forward to it. For now, enjoy the photos and the HD video we shot of the device.

Sony Ericsson gets official with Idou

Here’s a 12.1 megapixel shooter, dubbed Sony Ericsson Idou for those who just can’t take that betrayal by Samsung, any more. This touchscreen candybar will come with a 3.5-inch panel (640 x 320 resolution). Though it’s too early to air any speculations over tech specs and pricing, we’ve managed to pilfer an image and a video just for you!

The Idou is slated for a launch in Q2,2009. Stay tuned!

Sony Ericsson and KDDI release Xmini ' Tiny Walkman Phone'

Japanese techno-firm KDDI in close cooperation with Sony Ericsson announces Xmini - a 44 x 75 x 18mm walkman phone - a musical slider. This tiny-mini phone has a set of nice dedicated music keys that controls the walkman player. It has certain novelties as well, namely LISMO Video Service and EZ ‘Chaku Uta’ Full plus Mobile Music Download. Though size does matter, but functionality matters even more.

Technical Specifications: A 1.8 inch TFT display with 320 x 240 pixels, CDMA connectivity, clear stereo sound, Bluetooth, Email and 4GB of internal memory.

Pricing & Availability: There’s no word on pricing as yet. It’s available in Japan. Its release elsewhere may take some time.

CES ‘09 will feature an all new series of Walkman Phones from Sony Ericsson. Dubbed as W508, it comes in two base colors–metal gray and poetic white, so very reminiscent of W980. Deservedly, it’s being recognized as the most advanced gadget as far as music with a style-statement goes. So, get going with melody plugged into your ears!

Sony Ericsson C909 Audi R8 V10 Edition concept phone

Audi is a nice car and so is the Sony Ericsson C909 Audi R8 V10 Edition concept phone, designed by Tob!s at Esato. While a few at the forum page say that the handset has been made using a HTC Touch HD with Photoshop, but do I really care? I am in love with its sleek form factor and that’s what concept phones are all about. The phone is supposed to feature a 3-inch touchscreen with an 8-megapixel camera. The images are a treat for the eyes, but we better wait for Sony Ericsson to come up with a real one in the near future. The firm has already visualized the phones of 2012 to feature 12-20 megapixels camera.

Cellphone hacked for testing blood and detecting diseases

Cellphone hacking is nothing new but this hack for medical purposes is simply imposing. Scientists at the UCLA have transformed a Sony Ericsson phone into a blood testing unit, which can detect HIV, malaria and several other illnesses. This portable blood tester was created by just using an LED, a plastic light filter and some wires. The hacked device analyzes the blood cells that are placed on an integrated off-the-shelf camera sensor and lit up with a filtered light source. Pictured above is an off-the-shelf Sony Ericsson cellphone that has been modded into a LUCAS imager. LUCAS stands for Lensfree Ultrawide-field Cell-monitoring Array platform based on Shadow imaging.

Sony Ericsson HCB-108 is handsfree with over a day of talk time

It’s not often that we cover speakerphones here on PhoneMag, but the Sony Ericsson HCB-108 demanded coverage. Why, you may ask? Well, along with noise and echo reduction, this handsfree for your car provides up to 25 hours of talk time. Yes, I said 25!

You can also get up to a month of battery life on standby mode. These are some seriously impressive figures and though it has yet to be tested hands on, we’re betting it’ll come pretty close.

The HCB-108 will be available in either black or silver and should hit retailers sometime in the fourth quarter. So if you’re the type to chat it up while driving from point A to point B, or like to schedule appointments on the go, this speakerphone is the best bet for frequent talkers.

Sony Ericsson booth tour CTIA Las Vegas 2008

Sony Ericsson, not one to break the cone of handset-silence at CTIA Las Vegas 2008, didn't have anything new to show today. They won't have anything new to show tomorrow, or the next day. The booth was small, but they did have a live music show. An electronic music DJ and violinist make for an interesting duet, in a good way.

Unfortunately, the music show and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 were the biggest highlights of the booth. Sony Ericsson's Cybershot cameraphones and cool Bluetooth watches made a showing, but the XPERIA X1 was the center of attention. And, this time, Sony Ericsson actually let me touch the Windows Mobile 6.1 superphone(!).

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is an incredibly solid and slick handset. The slider mechanism is smooth and springy. The keyboard is a joy to use, it provides great tactile feedback. And, the display is just amazing. Having 800 pixels span the width of the display makes for some incredibly sharp images.

From the pictures, you don't really get a sense of the size (and heft, obviously), so let me tell you that it fits very nicely in the hand. It's not too light as to feel cheap, but not so heavy that you are burdened with another load in your pocket.

Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson is still tweaking their custom panel UI overlay on the newly announced Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. That meant the device was still slow to respond to some inputs, but this thing's got some serious potential.

The XPERIA X1's launch is still a long way off, so I'm not going to hold our breath for this thing any more. I've come to terms with waiting for this superphone to become a reality.
