Looks like Samsung is taking a step in the right direction with this multi-functional UMPC. It is still a concept at this time, but its sleek design is very appealing. It can be a portable computer, gaming device and media player.
More manufacturers are turning away from the keyboardless UMPCs like the Samsung Q1. Asus, Fujitsu and now even HP are entering this subnotebook/UMPC market. The Eee PC has been a huge success for Asus and with many professionals and students preferring the lightweight, portable tablet notebooks it's a no-brainer that all the other manufacturers would follow suit.

There is no word at this time if we will ever see this concept on the market or even a spec sheet. It looks very interesting though and the innovative split design, is similar to the Gateway One, but on a smaller scale. Being able to prop up the screen and detach the keyboard is a nice feature, imagine if it has a touchscreen too. This could be an Apple killer.

Mozilla, ARM and Samsung collaborate on Linux UMPC
Take some known innovators in the tech world, put them in a room with some felt-tip pens, paper and the command to mash up a few topical niches, and you might end up with the seven-strong group that today announced their intention to bring a Linux-based UMPC to the market in early 2009.
As well as Mozilla, ARM and Samsung, partners include Texas Instruments, MontaVista, Movial and Marvell Technologies - Microsoft, despite coining the UMPC moniker, is conspicuous by its absence - and the device they have in their sights is an open-source version of Nokia’s N800 Internet Tablet. Namely, a compact unit that relies on internet applications rather than demanding standalone software.

The eventual result would be a reference platform comprising of chip design, Debian-based Linux distro, MontaVista’s OS, Mozilla’s browser and then integrated hardware management and wireless networking along with a basic set of entertainment software. They expect to finalise the platform’s development early 2008.

Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC First Impressions Coming In
Slowly but surely, people are starting to receive the Samsung Q1 Ultra, and first impressions are beginning to come in. L0GiX, a GottaBeMobile.com forum member, just just received his Q1 Ultra and has posted a fantastic first impressions article, along with some good pictures. It seems L0GiX is really enjoying his new Q1 Ultra ( with Vista installed ), as he christened it "Q-Bert". Performance is a bit slow on Q-Bert, but after he uninstalled McAfee and adjusted the system properties for Best Performance, things took a turn for the better.
His quote regarding initial performance before tweaks:
Q-Bert started off running really slow. Everything I did took a while. I felt like I was working on a 486 again with Windows 98.
In addition to L0GiX and some other reports coming in, our own Dennis Rice has been using a Vista based Q1 Ultra this past week, and will be publishing an InkShow on it really soon. Stay tuned for Dennis' impressions, too.

Samsung ‘Q1 Ultra’ Second-generation UMPC begins shipping
Yesterday, Samsung announced the availability of its next-generation Q1 Ultra UMPC family at the Samsung Experience event that took place in New York. Exactly one year ago, Samsung introduced its Q1 UMPC. By the sound of it, the newer one seems to have some extra features when compared with the company’s offering last year. According to Christopher Franey, Samsung’s VP of Sales and Marketing, “Since the introduction of the Q1, Samsung has steadfastly been committed to the long-term growth and development of this fast-growing product segment. In creating the Q1 Ultra UMPC, Samsung has relied on consumer insights coupled with key technological advances to deliver a higher-performance solution packaged in an even more portable form factor that will appeal to a broader range of personal and professional users.”
Fans of Ultra Mobile PCs will be the first to notice that the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC has an integrated split QWERTY keyboard that allows for rapid text entries with the user’s thumbs while holding the unit in both hands.
In fact, one problem that UMPC users have encountered is data entry. Various methods have been tried and tested, such as touch screen, styli, and on-screen keyboards. However, no data entry methods really stood out.
Now, with the introduction of the Samsung Q1 Ultra’s split keyboard, the company hopes that it will make working on UMPCs much easier. The company also hopes that the introduction of the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC will increase market appeal towards UMPCs.
The Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC is built on the Intel Ultra Mobile processor that runs at either 600 or 800 MHz, along with 1GB of RAM.
The latest UMPC from Samsung, Q1 Ultra features a large 7-inch 1024 x 600 pixel LCD touch screen. What’s more, this next-generation UMPC also features a 1.34 mega pixel camera along with a 300 pixel Web cam for video conferencing.
Samsung has also claimed to have increased the battery life in the Q1 Ultra UMPC from 1.75 hours. It is now able to support a minimum of 4.5 hours of continuous run time.
Regarding the connectivity features of Samsung’s latest offering, the Q1 Ultra UMPC offers 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR wireless connectivity. What’s more, the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC also offers optional HSDPA cellular broadband support.
The Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC supports wither Windows XP tablet Edition or Windows Vista Home Premium.
Accessories for the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC include a US/Canadian GPRS module, a docking station with three USB ports and an external USB keyboard. And that is not all! You can also opt for an integrated fingerprint reader.
The Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC is available immediately for a price of $799 (Rs.32,555).
Samsung raise the UMPC bar: Q2 details leaked
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: give me Engadget’s inbox and I’ll give you, um, well, I’d give you a fresh English pound. They’ve hit Send/Receive and found some leaked photos of Samsung’s replacement for the dishy Q1 UMPC, uninspiringly named the Q2. At first it looks like it has a bigger screen, but actually it’s still 7-inches (although the resolution is a much bigger 1024×600 WSVGA) which means they’ve slimmed down the casing. It was never too chunky to begin with, so that can only be a good thing. 
Other innards include a yet-to-be-announced (or decided) Intel mobile processor, 1gb RAM, 60gb hard-drive and Vista Home Premium. The Q2 also takes a leaf out of ASUS’ R2H’s book, with a front-mounted VGA camera for video conferencing, partnered up with a rear-mounted 1.3-megapixel camera for surreptitiously taking photos of ladies.
Multiple wireless options are the icing on the cake (or is that the fingerprint reader?): Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi in b and g flavours, HSDPA and the elusive WiBro. Text entry complaints will hopefully be alleviated somewhat; while Samsung didn’t add to the sub-1-inch thickness with a slide-out keyboard, there’s a split-thumbboard a la the PepperPad.
If the PowerPoint slides are to be believed we can expect 4+hrs normal battery life or 6.5+ with the extended battery; not bad when in standard form it weighs just 1.54 pounds. I’m hoping they can bring this in at a reasonable price - the expense (together with the lack of keyboard) was one of the primary concerns aimed by mainstream reviewers at the UMPC concept.
