Nokia releases sexy black N82 handset

Finnish mobile phone giant, Nokia Corp. has this week moved to broaden the core appeal of its already expansive product range by whipping the covers of aesthetic expectancy off a sexily revamped version of its N82 device.

Clad from head-to-foot in stylish and appealing new jet black colouring, the N82 in black delivers a tempting mix of state-of-the-art imaging, integrated navigation and high-speed Internet connectivity to Nokia’s hugely popular line of Nseries handsets.

Ultimately, press blurb notwithstanding, it’s the N82 with a different sense of fashion values, and that’s about it.

Putting colour-based cynicism aside for a moment for the sake of those who know nothing about the N82, Nokia’s diminutive multimedia computer is supposedly “made for storytelling,” according to Nseries director Juha Kokkonen.

“As one of Nokia's leading-edge connected camera, the Nokia N82 in black captures people's journeys and discoveries,” adds the Nokia exec. “With built-in A-GPS it even helps people to find new places by pairing ‘contextual’ information with a wide array of connectivity features such as Wi-Fi and HSDPA. We make it easy for consumers to quickly share those moments as they happen.”

Specifically, that much-touted “storytelling” aspect is delivered by enabling users to “geotag” their captured images, allowing them to save not just by date but also by location too.

The N82 also includes various “compelling” photography features to further enhance the user experience, including a 5.0 mega pixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a built-in Xenon flash.

It also bundles in interface advantages such as ultra-fast activation, autofocus and dedicated assist lamp, fast shot reloading, and DVD-like video capture.

Beyond the N82’s photography-based elements, it also offers up integrated A-GPS location for instant image tagging, along with swift content sharing opportunities via picture and/or image upload through the likes of Flickr, YouTube, Ovi and Share.

The Nokia N82 offers memory capabilities of up to 8GB thanks to its microSD memory card slot, which enables users to store up to 3,600 high-resolution images, 6,000 song tracks, or 5 hours of high-quality video footage.

Again, the only thing that’s truly different with this latest N82 is that it’s black styling takes its place beside the existing silver option. Still, banal as that may seem, the N82 is a pretty slick piece of kit, and glossy black is always preferable to silver, despite its near-magnetic attraction to fingerprints.

Nokia will be releasing the black N82 to retail in a few weeks, with a connected recommended retail price of around 400 Euros.

Mobile Phone Software that Reads to the Blind developed

Day in and day out we keep reporting about innovative technologies. From groundbreaking mobile phones with fold-out displays to gigantic Plasma HDTVs to revolutionary contact lens, 2008 has witnessed a flurry of mind-blowing technologies just within a month’s time. But this time around that aptly define novel technology, and is truly for a good cause.

Technology futurist Ray Kurzweil and the National Federation of the Blind have got together to develop the “the smallest text-to-speech reading device in history.”

K-NFB Reading Technology is a joint initiative between Kurzweil Technologies Inc. of Wellesley Hills, Mass. and the Maryland-based National Federation of the Blind developing reading software for text-to-speech devices. The technology will be installed on the Nokia N82 mobile phone, which will most probably operate in a Symbian OS. This technology will give users the ability to take pictures of text and then convert the text into audible speech. In the past, the National Federation of the Blind has installed the technology on digital assistants, however this time the first time that it would be embedded in a mobile phone.

This new piece of technology will not only enable the visually impaired to hear the content of the documents, but will also facilitate individuals with learning disabilities or dyslexia to enlarge, read, track, and highlight printed materials with the help of the handset’s large display, noted the National Federation of the Blind.Ray Kurzweil, President and CEO of K-NFB Reading Technology, Inc. said, “Technology that enlarges the printed word or converts it to speech has dramatically improved the lives of millions of Americans with many types of disabilities, enabling them to read and comprehend printed materials to which they never before had access.” Adding, “This innovation has created opportunities disabled people had never considered before due to the large amounts of reading required in certain occupations. The first machine of this type was the size of a washing machine. As optical character recognition technology is integrated into smaller and smaller devices, access to print becomes available almost instantaneously.”

In addition, the knfbREADER Mobile also incorporates all the other key features built into the N82, such as music playback, an integrated GPS receiver, wireless communication, an in-built 5MP autofocus camera, Web and email access. Calendaring and task management features are also packed in.

While the Nokia N82 mobile phone is priced at around $500, the software will cost around $1,595.

In the recent past companies have developed devices and services for the visually impaired that are sure to get them out of the constricted world of Braille on mere paper. While Microsoft and Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) Consortium are in the works of rolling out a standards-based project that would allow visually impaired or print-disabled users to work on computer systems; Yahoo! India made services accessible to the visually disabled. IBM and Google are also not way behind. Apart from the leaders, several other companies have made life simpler for them by introducing things like “Seeing” shoes, special cameras etc.

A Nokia Camera Phone That’s More Like a Camera With a Phone Attached

It didn’t take long for camera phones to grow up. Only a few years ago, the best ones took pictures with 1 megapixel of resolution. Now Nokia is coming out with the N82, a phone that takes 5-megapixel photos, higher quality than some point-and-shoot cameras.

The diminutive N82, weighing about four ounces, is a successor to the N80 and includes a flash and Carl Zeiss optics. It has 2 gigabytes of storage space for photos and can display pictures and video on a television using an optional TV-out dock. It will be available early next year for about $630 at nseries.com.

Photos can be sent to the expandable internal memory or straight to almost any photo-sharing site over cellular or Wi-Fi networks. It also plays back MP3 music files and most video files and even has a built-in FM tuner.

Not enough? The N82 also has a position sensor — it will flip the screen when you want to show pictures in landscape mode — and supports e-mail and even voice-over-Internet calls. Try to get your old camera phone to do that.

I noticed that Engadget found this N82 unboxing video by a Greek man who I must attempt to locate and party with. I’m not even going to do an unboxing video now, seriously, I can’t top this. What I will do however, later today, is take some pictures of the box with my Nokia N82 so you can get a better look at it. Until then, bust a move:

Live Spy Pics: Nokia N82 Imaging Phone

I'm a pretty big fan of the N-series of cell phones from Nokia, so you can probably imagine my excitement to see the Nokia N82 live and in person. Well, not completely live, but these real world spy pics are the next best thing.

As you can quite plainly see through the trio of photographs, the Nokia N82 takes on a rather conventional candybar design with very narrow buttons for the numeric keypad. The call and end buttons have been shoved to the edge, in order to make room for four other navigation buttons, in addition to the controller in the center.
